Prairie Grove Chapter #1006 United
Daughters of the Confederacy Prairie Grove, Arkansas
On August 1, 1906, the United Daughters of
the Confederacy welcomed the Prairie Grove Chapter into its fold, a sisterhood of women whose fathers, husbands, and brethren
fought under the flag of the Confederate States of America during the War Between the States.
Determined to remember and honor these
men, the Prairie Grove Chapter members were destined to be the founders of today's Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park. Immediately
after becoming an official chapter of the UDC, the women undertook as their first project the purchase of the grounds where
the Battle of Prairie Grove had been fought, and turn it into a place where the veterans could conduct an annual reunion.
What began as a "Confederate Memorial Park" of 9.75 acres, is now the beautiful Prairie Grove Battlefield Historic State Park
of about 850 acres.
Don't let the Sesquicentennial pass you by. It doesn't take much to
get in the mood. Currently, 5 states that were a part of the world 150 years ago have special sesquicentennial commission
web sites. Be sure to visit them soon and often!
Note: Carrie Cook, Oklahoma Division Historian, reminds
us that Oklahoma did not exist as a state in the 186-'s, so, it is not out of the ordinary for them
not to have such a commission. Reach out across the state line to include them in notices abour sesquisential events..
CONFEDERATE MEMORIAL DAY 2009
At the last meeting, members voted to establish Chapter 1006 as a Life Member of the Southern Memorial
Association.
Our President has encouraged each member to attend the 136th annual Southern Memorial Day ceremony
at the Confederate Cemetery in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Since 1873, there has been a ceremony at the cemetery sometime in May or June. Over the
years the ceremony has taken place on weekdays and Saturdays and Sundays and at various times. At one time, members chose
to have the ceremony near the birthday of Jefferson Davis. Another significant time was a date chosen close to June
10th when the association was formed.
The current officers of the SMA voted to change the ceremony date from the second Saturday of June
to the FIRST Saturday of June due to the big civil war weekend event started a couple of years ago in Benton
County at the Pea Ridge Military Park. That event is quite popular and has lots of fun and interesting things to do
and see and draws many away from the memorial ceremony at the Confederate cemetery.
Come if you can!
Saturday June 6th at 10 a.m at the Confederate
Cemetery. We are honored to have a Son of a Confederate Veteran as our guest speaker this year, Mr. Doug Laman, the
Commander of the SCV Camp in Springdale. A very talented lady, Joyce Warren-Pruett, is our guest musician. Joyce
is a member of the Prairie Grove Chapter UDC.
Please brings real flower petals or real bouquets to place at the monument.
We will provide some chairs, but if you have your own lawn chair you are welcome to bring it.
